On Anime: 2011 Year-Ender

Seems to be a late year ender, but I still want to do this.

You might see that the list was a little bit inconsistent with my per-season reviews, it's there are animes that extended for more than a season and made a lasting effect on me, in the case of Un-Go being on the bottom of my top list and Mirai Nikki and Guilty Crown only on the Honorable mention, it is because I made my list before I saw the last episodes of Mirai Nikki and Guilty Crown, and I think, Un-Go has a more lasting effect than the other two.

I overlooked Tiger and Bunny last spring so I never made any write up about it, but it has been one of the best visual treat of the year, coming from Sunrise, also one of the most strongest plot.

On Anime: Fall 2011 Review

10

This was the first of it's kind, I think. A Puzzle anime. Everything happen so fast that I couldn't even think on how the puzzle works sometime. It was the story that got me to this. It was well written. The characters are planned good and it's transitions per episodes are smooth no matter how heavy things might get.

09

I never played the game, so I never complained how this was a big spoiler.
Narukami Yu and his gang searched for the answers inside the television screen, in a world which was heavily inspired by Jung's Analytic Psychology. The structure is less conventional for a battle anime, or a shounen anime in general. As my brother said so who have played the game, it pledged loyalty with the video game plot that's why battles are not present on some episodes.

08

This mostly talkative prequel to Fate/Zero gave the most memorable idiological discussion since that last episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion. That was episode 11, the Grail Dialogue, wherein they've discussed what does it mean to be a king. From the reputation it held from it's former series and how it stands now, I'd never be surprised if this one topped any other's list from last season, or maybe, even last year.

07

Our beauty-in-vain, Chihaya Ayase founded and lead a club dedicated to karuta, a japanese card game featuring 100 classic japanese poems. It's a celebration of culture and love that the Japanese could only pull off.

06

The one of the two detective mystery series this season (one being Persona 4). It's post apocalyptic background and references to old ghost stories gave a different kind of feel. It's mystery after mystery after mystery. I just hoped it was longer, but the way it is now, is enough to be remembered.

05

This has the best art of the season. Visually stunning. That aside, the plot is also good, though there are still rooms for more development. Inori has been one of the most interesting characters from this season, she's charming yet mysterious.

04

A week before this was aired, I watched the OVA and I hoped for a comic battle anime with a love story in it plus some Death Note elements. I never thought it would get better. The series is darker and more mature as it was in the OVA. It has all those strange elements in it, without losing focus on the main plot.

03

Even if you remove the erotic elements, it'd still be good. This has been noted as one of it's kind in the genre, since the protagonist here is as sincere as he could be on finding friends, and not with some internal motives like on those other harem series.

02

Low-brow comedy, light music, and cats. This goes up among the best comedy series this year together with Nichijou. The all-boys casting in this has its own charisma. It opens it's story not only to male audiences but also on the females. The elements of nostalgia on the first parts of the series are great.

01

The most shounen of all shounen series this season. Who would've thought food and battle anime could mingle together in harmony? The uniqueness (or bizarreness) of each character is remarkable which bring forth the comic elements of this series. The fan-services are all placed in good use. The very bonus here, is that, of all the shounen series, the protagonist here is one of the least annoying.
